NO INSURANCE , you know, just so there's no confusion when the medcis come to scoop us off the road. Looks like he's pretty messed-up but his toe ring says he's not insured, so yeah, you'll have to come and get him . Or what if there's just a simple orthopedic injury? Let's say, a fracture dislocation. It could be fixed, but, oh, too bad you don't have insurance guess you're permanently disabled, but hey, it's the land of the free!Riders can blather till the cows come home about their personal liberties and right to feel the wind in their hair and blah, blah, blah. Honestly, no one really gives a shit about anyone's right to fuck up. What we DO (and SHOULD) give a shit about is the cost of said stupidity to society. If every helmetless head injury ended in death, it'd be a no-brainer (sorry; I couldn't resist). We all know that's not the case. The economic spectrum of brain injury ranges from no time in the hospital but weeks off work (if you don't lose your job all together) to months in the ICU, multiple surgeries, infections, blood clots, feeding tubes, rehab .no matter how you look at it, brain injuries are expensive to society, either in lost productivity, medical expenses, family breakdown, social dysfunction, or more. Limited personal responsibility for the consequences of this particular action is a fantasy that does not exist.One more thing US readers should be aware of: our new insurance mandate, the dreaded Obamacare , will dramatically reduce the burden of uninsured stupidity to taxpayers. However, insurance companies (because remember, it's just a mandate to carry insurance) can still deny coverage for whatever the hell they want (as long as it's not a pre-existing condition). I've had more than one patient slapped with a huge hospital bill because of the teeny, tiny print buried in the back of their policy that describes motorcycle-riding as risk-seeking behavior in which injuries incurred are not covered.
